Paul has directed premieres including working alongside John Guare on the regional premiere of Guare's A Free Man of Color starring Alvin Keith. He also directed the U.S. regional premiere of Mamma Mia! for Barter Theatre.

Original works staged in New York include the comedies Humility, Confession and The Almost True and Truly Remarkable Adventures of Israel Potter, American Patriot. The latter play by Joe Bravaco and Larry Rosler based on the Herman Melville novel.

Other directing credits include: The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Sunshine Boys, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Rocky Horror Show, Phantom, Once Upon A Mattress, Footloose, Bat Boy, Guys and Dolls, the New York premieres of Humility and Confession, and his revolutionary staging of Evita set within a crumbling Argentine Pampas cantina.
