- ABOUT PAUL -

Paul Russell; casting director, director, and author of the best-selling book for actors ACTING: Make It Your BusinessHow to Avoid Mistakes and Achieve Success as a Working Actor has over 40 years experience in entertainment including film, TV, Broadway, regional theater, and teaching at prominent, university acting programs. He began his career journey as a successful working actor.

As an independent casting director, he has cast for major studios including 20th Century Fox, HBO; television network series for NBC, CBS, and Warner Brothers. His work in casting includes working with leading Hollywood actors including: Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Bruce Willis, Jennifer Aniston, Cynthia Nixon, Ileana Douglas, Lainie Kazan, Phylicia Rashād, Kevin Bacon, Victor Garber, and Jerry Stiller. He cast COBB produced by Kevin Spacey in New York & L.A. for which Mr. Russell’s work was recognized by a special Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Cast. He cast Tony-winner Andre De Shields in the revival of Neil Simon’s The Good Doctor, plus the original productions of String Fever (starring Cynthia Nixon), Pera Palas (starring John Spencer of The West Wing), Woody Guthrie's American Song (Drama Desk noms.), Disney’s Beauty and The Beast, The Lion King, and Laughter On the 23rd Floor. Casting of national tours includes, Forever Plaid, Of Mice and Men, The Diary of Anne Frank, Civil War Voices, and Keep On The Sunny Side. Plus, he placed hundreds of actors in over 400 plays, musicals, classical works and premieres for more than two dozen, acclaimed, Shakespeare festivals and regional theaters including the Asolo Theatre Festival, San Jose Rep., Florida Stage, Two River Theatre, Nebraska Shakespeare Festival, and the Barter Theatre.

As a director, featured in American Theatre Magazine, Russell has served both premieres and established works. He was chosen as the director for the first U.S., post-Broadway production of Mamma Mia! for the Tony-recognized Barter Theatre. The sold-out run broke the Barter’s 80 year-old box office records which forced a remount of the production several months later. Breaking the records of Mamma Mia! was Russell’s staging of Footloose at the Barter (this was his second direction of the film-inspired musical). Other directing credits for the Barter include The Scarlet Pimpernel, Bat Boy, and Russell’s re-imaging of Oliver! set against the historical backdrop of London during the Blitz. Oliver! received national attention, and Mr. Russell staged it again for Cape Fear Repertory. He has worked alongside legendary screenwriter and playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation) to direct the regional premiere of Guare's A Free Man of Color. Other regional directing includes for Playhouse on The Square, State Theatre, South Jersey Regional Arts Center, and locally with Plays-In-The-Park, and Studio Playhouse. New York directing includes the premieres of the comedies Humility, and Confession.

As an educator, Paul Russell was a faculty member for the NYU-Tisch theater arts program at The Atlantic Theatre Company; teaching audition technique and business of acting. He is also frequently invited as a guest, master class lecturer on the campuses of America’s finest performing arts schools including: Yale, Rutgers, Hofstra, Temple University, The University of The Arts, Elon University, James Madison University, Florida Southern College, Oklahoma Central University, Wright State University, Oakland University, Louisiana State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Montclair State University, and Northeastern University.

Paul is an editorial contributor for Back Stage and Casting Connections. His book ACTING: Make It Your Business is so popular that a newly, expanded 2nd Edition is set to be released soon.
